German Film at the Oscars

So, German film made a reasonable showing for the Oscars nominations ....

"The Baader-Meinhof Complex," a film about the Baader-Meinhof gang, a terrorist organization from the 1970s, is in competition for best foreign film. It will probably lose to "Waltz with Bashir," the amazing animated film about the situation of Palestinians.

The legendary film maker Werzer Herzog got a nomination in the documentary category for his film about a trip to Antartica.

Some short films from Germany also got nominated in the short film category.

Most significant though is probably "The Reader," which is not a German film pe se, but is based on the beststelling German novel of the same name by Bernhard Schlink. Kate Winslett in particular is racking up awards for her portrayal of an illiterate concentration camp guard.
